Situation is Calm Today in Batam after Worker Riot Last Week

Today (Nov 28, 2011) in Batam island was calm and all activity running as usual despite of some SMS rumor yesterday that today will be another big demonstration, today situation is really peaceful different from few days ago when some angry workers demanding higher minimum wages took to the streets, vandalizing buildings and police posts.

This situation may be caused by the Riau Islands Governor Sani M, on this day set a minimum wage increase in the City Batam in year 2012 for 1.31 million Rupiah increase Rp130,000 from last year minimum wages Rp1.18 million

This minimum wages city (MSEs) scale is determined from the three figures that have been proposed by Wage Council Kepri post-action labor unrest last week.

Although the determination of this number means is Rp450,000 under the Union proposal which proposes magnitude MSEs Rp1.76 million or equivalent to their real minimum survived wages survey. And was Rp 50,000 higher at the suggestion of entrepreneurs amounting to Rp1.26 million or equivalent to the minimum survive wages survey version of entrepreneurs. While this figure also higher from the initial proposal Batam City Government amounting to Rp1.30 million.

M Sani (Riau Islands Governor) said to take immediate provision of this MSE increase after reaching a deal with unions at a meeting with representatives of Trade Unions in Tanjung Pinang, on Sunday.

In the process of meeting with the union last week, the provincial government also received the aspirations of Trade Unions who want Batam City Government abolished the tax for the boarding-lodging and restaurants so as not to burden the earnings of workers in paying the rent and meet food needs.

In addition, the provincial government is also ready to ease the burden of labor from the transportation sector by increasing the bus fleet workers. While also improving the quality of workers by providing training, encouraging cooperatives for workers and relocate the Court of Industrial Law (PHI) to Batam.

"The size of this figure is below the proposed work, and we set this by adding the value of the consideration with which they were received by MSE policy of eliminating such taxes and transportation," Sani added.

Setting process is taken during tripartite negotiations between Batam City Government, Employers and unions do not meet the agreement. Even at the end of the last rallies of workers demanding higher MSEs in batam for year 2012, Rp 1.76 million expires uproar after Mayor Batam not meet representatives of the rally.

Labor protests last week had resulted in 1500 company in Batam paralyzed and estimated to have accumulated losses up to U.S. $ 300 million dollars.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the All Indonesian Workers Union (SPSI) Batam, Syaiful Badri said this deal was accepted reluctantly by SPSI.

Even so, Syaiful said that this new determination of 2012 MSEs value does not guarantee there will be no protests from the workers who demanded the amount of MSEs of Batam in 2012, Rp 1.76 million or equivalent to their real minimum survived wages survey. (Bisnis Indonesia, 28 November 2011, http://www.bisnis.com/articles/gubernur-kepri-tetapkan-umk-kota-batam-rp1-31-juta )

But we as community in this beautiful Batam Island certainly hope that the situation can be kept safe and secure in future.

Batam Island - An Indulge Island Near Singapore

Batam is a well-liked vacation spot for fun starved Singaporeans, who find the Singapore's digital life a bit 'dry'. Batam is greatest visited from Singapore, where the connecting ferries present an excellent service and frequency for connecting to Batam, although the ferry fare of average S$ 45 for a return fare for about an hour trip is kind of steep.

Batam is a short ferry ride away and belongs to Riau Province of Indonesia. The distance between Batam and Singapore is less than 20 kms. Nature and panorama wise, Batam Island doesnt have much to offer, however if you wish to get pleasure from cheap seafood and do loads of shopping at very reasonable price, Batam is the place for you. Nightlife is also quite lively, though, typically for all of the bad reasons. However, spa, massage and beer are very low price here. The hotels are a lot and for food, particularly seafood, you're spoilt for choice.

There is not much one can indulge while in Batam. One can try some of these activities:

1. Go for a long Drive through the Arch Bridge (Barelang bridges) to neighboring islands and to the Vietnamese refugee camp.

2. Need some pampering? Get a spa treatment at Batam! It is very cheap as compared to the packages in Singapore. You just paid S$50 on top of the accommodation to have a 2.5 hour treatment including body scrub, body massage, facial treatment and herbal bat.

3. Shopping at Nagoya Hill, It was a 30 minutes ride from the resort to Nagoya Hill Shopping Mall. First thing you may curious was, "Why is it called Nagoya Hill when you’re not in Japan?" No idea.

4. Go pubbing in numerous bars and discos

5. Dining, Batam has several fine restaurants where you can enjoy some great cuisine. If you want to enjoy the Batam fast-food experience, the best places are the A1 Pujasera, Windsor and the Nagoya Food Courts. If you want fine dining then don't miss out on going to the Golden Prawn Seafood Restaurant in Bengkong, for some fresh seafood dishes.

Batam is not famous for good beaches. So don’t expect a lot. But there are a few sea- facing resorts like Turi Beach Resort, Batam View beach resort, located near Nongsa village, which are worth exploring.

Ferry Batam – Singapore Information

A little info about sea travel by ferry between Batam - Singapore - Batam.

There are several ports in Batam ferry to Singapore, namely in Batam Centre (near the Otorita Batam and Megamall), Batu Ampar/harbourbay (closest to the shopping and entertainment center that is Nagoya Batam), Sekupang, Waterfront City Marina

These four ports that depart from or towards the ferry port of Harbourfront in Singapore. In addition there is also a ferry port in Nongsapura that specializes in serving the route from or to the port of Singapore Tanah Merah ferry. Among the five ports are classified as crowded and favorite port are Batam Centre, Harbourbay in Batu Ampar and Sekupang ports.

There are several ferry operators providing ferry services from Batam to Singapore and back to Batam, including Penguin, Batam Fast, Wavemaster (specializing in HarbourBay Batu Ampar), and the latest Pacific ferry (serving only route to and from the Sekupang).

The cost of ferry tickets to be issued, for the passengers passports Indonesia, if you take a return ticket (back and forth) from Batam, then the total cost including the cost of back after tax / tax is Between SGD $ 40 ~ SGD $ 48 . If taken from Singapore will be more expensive about SGD $ 5. If you just take a ticket for one-way (one way), then I only recommend the Penguin ferry ride where you will not be so loss, compared with other operators ride. A clear one-way ticket costs would be more expensive than half the price of a return ticket, but if you take a return ticket, tickets to go home you can still be used until a few months ahead, and that too can be transferred to someone else because no names are listed in tickets before you buy.

And, as I had mentioned, there are two ferry ports in the port of Singapore to Batam Tanah Merah (Batam route serves only to Nongsapura), and port Harbourfront (the main port and the most widely used to Batam). Harbourfront located right in front of the Singapore Sentosa Island. This port is located in a mall in Singapore, and directly connected to the MRT railway lines, not far from access to public buses, as well as taxi services are always available.

Scheduled departure both from Batam or Singapore almost every hour, starting from 6 am Batam time (Batam Centre specifically) or 7 am Singapore time until about 9:00 to 9:30 pm local time for the last ferry. You will not be able to book a ferry ticket at the ticket counter 15 minutes before departure time. You also should book ferry tickets in advance by phone if you wished for a specific departure time, especially at times of booming passenger (usually weekends and the holidays), unless you have a more flexible time.

Story of Tragedy
Various tragic stories were the life of these Vietnamese refugees. One is the story of Dai Nhan Tinh, a Vietnamese refugee woman. She turns brutally raped by several other refugees in one forest area refugee camps. Shortly after the incident, Tinh Nhan was to end her own life by hanging herself not far from the barracks where she and her family lived. This incident left a deep sorrow to the refugees.
To commemorate this tragic event, Humanity Statue was built at the location where the rape occurred. The statue was made by Nguyen Van Tuyen, a refugee who also sympathizes with this tragedy.
Another tragic story takes place when the Vietnamese refugees will be repatriated to Vietnam, having the opportunity to become citizens in western countries is closed. This situation is strongly opposed by the refugees, because of fears of what will happen when they return to Vietnam.
Some Vietnamese refugees who despair over the situation, eventually committed suicide together. While this happens, the repatriation of refugees to Vietnam continues.
Religious Living
The Vietnamese refugees who lived on Galang Island adhere to different religions. They also set up various religious places in accordance with their religion. There Duc Ta on Me To Catholic Church and Nha Vo Duc Me Nhiem Catholic Church used by the refugees are Catholics to hold Mass, or conduct meetings. The uniqueness of Nha Duc Me Vo To Nhiem Catholic Church is a statue of the Virgin Mary on a 'ship' out of this church, as a warning for the safety of Vietnamese refugees to Galang Island by boat. Batam Night Life in the Fasting Month of Ramadan

The Batam municipality is allowing nightspots to operate during most of Ramadan only will be closed for nine days with a 3-3-3 format in the month of Ramadan. According to Head of Public Relations of Batam municipality, entertainment venues will be closed the day before Ramadan, Ramadan day 1-2,   Ramadan day 16-18, then the last day and two day after Ramadan. For night spots such as discos, pubs, karaoke bars, night clubs, etc., can be started from 21.00 pm until 2:00 pm.
In my opinion, the government's decision to keep open the nightlife in Batam is due to two reasons, namely related to the amount of revenue from the night life entertainment industry and the dilemma that will face by thousands of night life workers that do not work automatically will have an impact on income for them.
At this year Batam have nightspots close to 700, these figure is certainly a very promising figure on the revenue, large number nightspots certainly proportional to the number of employees.
But street crime is predicted to increase, along with an increasing need during the fasting month and ahead of Idul Fitri. Batam is usually safe during the daytime hours, however at night in case you are in the entertainment areas of Nagoya it is best to be caution. Don't walk alone at night time, if you wish to leave someplace and it's late, find someone else who's leaving or about to leave, or keep until it closes and then all go together. Should you really need to get back to your hotel call the hotel staff and have them send a car to pick you. As mostly taxis in Batam not regulated or owned by a central group (like Bluebird in Jakarta) you may not be secure hiring a taxi off the street either. Walking in teams or two or three is probably okay however don't get into discussions with the locals as you may be asking to have your wallet or purse taken from you. If this happens, don't chase, just back to the place where you stay and report to the police later.

Batam Island Before and After

When I first arrived in Batam island in 2003, the island's weather was so hot and stinging (about 33 ° C showed at that time). From Hang Nadim Airport, we set off towards the lodgings provided by our company. Along the way, we seen a lot of trees on the right and left side of the road. This island looks like a forest that has not been touched by human hands. There are still many visible puddles like small lakes between trees, red soil which adds to the impression that the island is really still half of forest. However, after 15 minutes we entered the heart of this island. Although still many trees and hills seen along the road, but we're starting to see some houses and shops that line in the city. Moreover, after entering Nagoya district where we staying, Nagoya is a far cry from the first impression we get when we set foot on the island of Batam, a wilderness. Nagoya is a sparkling area with full pulse-beat of the people doing business.

But in seven years, the development of the island is growing very fast. New housing, new malls, new hotels are popping up a lot. Areas that had been a land of trees to be razed and replaced with residential buildings and ruko (house – shop). Not only land was trimmed, hills were cut, battered and cut down to establish of housing with atmosphere of the hills. Development is so fast in this island that sometime ignored environmental preservation.

Batam Island alone possesses the 415 km2 area. But Otorita Batam (Batam Authority) has expanded it by building bridges to several islands including the island of Rempang and Galang. Bridge was named Barelang Bridge (Batam, Rempang, Galang). Batam has become 715 km2. (Larger than Singapore which only 647 km2). Natural disaster someday will happen to this small island if we do not keep and preserve its natural. So I think the local government is keen to control the preservation of nature before it’s too late. Do not let the island is submerged by the flood! Do not let this island landslides leveled to the ground!

Alternative Recreation Place In Batam island : Hutan Wisata Mata Kucing

Hutan Mata Kucing(Cats Eye Forest) is one alternative for the people in Batam island as a place of recreation or family gathering. Previously I had several times go there with my friends, Hutan Wisata Mata Kucing is quite interesting place. As the name implies, then most of the region is a forest area that is well maintained, located about one to two miles from the Simpang Tiga Temiang Batu Aji (road name) or from the intersection STC Sekupang.

In this jungle, there is a small zoo or a mini zoo, swimming pool with water comes from water springs in there, and as I remember there is also a fish pond with contents jumbo-sized fish like Arapaima fish or other big freshwater fish like catfish.

What to Do at Batam for One Day Leisure/Short Trip?

Where to Go ?

Visit Barelang Bridge, the Icon of Batam. Don’t say you’ve ever traveled to Batam if you did not visit Barelang yet. This bridge called Barelang because it connects Batam island (BA), Rempang island (RE), Galang island (LANG), and others small islands in the path.

Batam was a great place to spend on massage due to their low cost (about S$15 for a 1.5 hour) for full body massage.

Batam, A City at the Edge

Batam, Indonesia

Batam, Indonesia was a quiet coastal backwater, far from central Jakarta, at the forgotten edge of Indonesia. This dramatically changed in 1989, when the duty free and export zone was established. Although Batam has lost some of its economic luster to the Chinese and Vietnamese in the 2000s, the 80s and 90s was a period of dramatic transformation. The new Hang Nadim Airport, good class hotels, restaurants and entertainment complexes mushroomed all over Batam island. Batam became the Singaporeans' playground. The golf courses are busy on every weekend, and the huge hawker centre at Pujasera teems with fresh seafood and Singaporeans alike.

Batam has a deserved reputation for its seafood restaurants. Prawns, lobsters, green clams, and the local specialty "Gong Gong" are on offer at many restaurants. Gong Gong is a conch-shaped mollusc, boiled, extracted on a toothpick, and dipped into spicy hot sambal sauce.

Nights are usually spent at a discotheque or a karaoke bar. Alternatively, take time out from eating, shopping and your massage. You might find an interesting cultural performance at "Desa Seni" in Sekupang.

Most travelers to Batam stay around either Nagoya or Waterfront City. Sekupang is the usual port of entry if you are arriving by the ferries from Singapore's WTC. Ferries to other domestic destinations leave from the pier next door. It is a 30min taxi ride to downtown Nagoya.

Nagoya (yes, it is named after the Japanese city), is the effective centre for the Batam traveler. You will find the best hotels in town, the inimitable Pujasera Hawker Centre, and of course numerous Spas offering sports massage.

Waterfront City on the west coast of Batam, south of Sekupang, is a magnet for thrill seekers. Thrills include bungee-jumping, and even indoor skiing. By night, the area comes alive with more than a handful discos and karaoke pubs. Not suitable for the faint hearted. Batam is a duty free zone. Alcohol and cigarettes are ridiculously cheap.

Overall, there is a distinct cowboy vibe to the whole Batam experience. Still, it's a fun stopover for your Visa Run to and from Singapore.

Batam is also a busy port and industrial centre. Consequently, there are several good midpriced hotels in the city. Far better than you would find anywhere else in Sumatra. You can find a list of hotels here.

It is also a great place to swing your golf clubs. Several fine courses are available at a fraction of Singapore prices. Do note that beach lovers will be disappointed. Swimming here is best done in the hotel pools.

The illegal casinos run by the syndicates have also shut down.

Overall, it is a good way to escape from Singapore. Cheap, noisy, and loads of fun if you are looking for some naughty fun.

Bintan Island of Indonesia

Bintan is one of the islands of Riau Archipelago of Indonesia. It is situated at about 40km from Singapore. Its capital, Tanjung Pinang is actually the capital of Riau Archipelago. From here you can see the importance of Bintan island.

Compared with Batam, Bintan is richer in its history. In conjunction with this background, it has more historical sites to visit.

Bintan's history is intertwined closely with those of Malacca and Johor Sultanates. Bintan and the rest of Riau Arcipelago were ruled by the Malacca Sultanate. When the Portuguese attacked Malacca in 1511, its king fled to Pahang of Malay Peninsula and later to Bintan where he tried to repossess Malacca. His successor moved to Johor and established the Johor Sultanate.

Later, the Dutch gained control of Bintan island. However, the Dutch was later driven out by a force supported by Malacca Sultanate.

In 1824, the Treaty of London finally settled that the islands south of Singapore are Dutch Territories. Again Bintan was under the control of the Dutch.

Pulau Penyengat is a must see historical site for visitors. It is situated at about 6km from Tanjung Pinang. It was the religious, cultural and administration centre of the region in 19th century. Sultan Mahmud Shah of Malacca gave this island to his bride, Raja Hamidah, daughter of Raja Ali Haji, the Bugis commander of Bintan, in an attempt to reach peace between the Malay and the Bugis. A grand mosque, Masjid Raya was built on the island. The mosque is huge and is visible from Tanjung Pinang.

Raja Ali Haji was the hero to Bintan's people. There is a monument by the seaside that commemorates him who sacrificed his life for his people against the Dutch.

Within the town of Tanjung Pinang, there is a Dutch Colonial Graveyard which reflects the life of the seamen at the old days.

Banyan Tree Temple is a popular place for the local Chinese community and Singaporean visitors. It is situated in a town called Senggarang. The temple is about 100 years old.

For holiday makers, there are broadly 2 areas for you to choose i.e. Lagoi (Bintan Resorts) at the northern part or Trikora Beach at the east of the island.

Lagoi is full of high end resorts like Banyan Tree Resort and Club Med Ria. These are exclusive resorts complete with golf courses designed by world renowned golf course designers.

Resorts and hotels at theTrikora Beach are affordable to average visitors. To name a few: Bintan Agro Beach Resorts, resorts complete with fishing facilities like Ocean Bay Resort and Kolam Kelong Trikora. There is even a resort providing diving guide i.e. Traveler Pondok Wisita. Visitors may stay in its air-conditioned or non-air-conditioned rooms overnight before diving.

Bintan is accessible from Johor Bahru and Singapore by ferry.
