Indonesia’s Batam Island Eyes Singapore Tourism Growth

Indonesia's Batam island, an industrial zone with desires of remodeling into a significant vacationer destination, is sprucing itself up to lure massive-spending guests from subsequent-door Singapore.

Batam is seeking to emulate the success of other Indonesian island close to Singapore, Bintan, which is already luxurious seashore and golfing vacation spot after opening high-pace ferry links to the town-state within the 1990s.

To do so it must overhaul its picture to faucet into the spillover from the booming tourism market in Singapore, the city-state only a 45-minute ferry trip away.

With Malaysia's close by Johor state luring extra visitors to its Iskandar metropolis, islands, seashores, palaces and national parks, Batam faces stiff competition. Johor recorded 15 million foreign arrivals in 2011, ninety % of them day-tripping Singaporeans.

Indonesian tourism officials say arrivals in Batam have stabilized at around a million yearly for the previous five years, lots of them coming via ferry from Singapore, which welcomed more than thirteen million guests in 2011.

While nearly a third of the Singapore visitors were from Indonesia and Malaysia, the remaining are vacationers from different countries who Batam officers hope may very well be enticed to visit if it develops more attractions.

With its large industrial sector and legions of migrant employees, Batam city is thoroughly urbanized, however exterior town, underdeveloped islets and coastal areas are being eyed by investors.

Ong Chih Ching, a Singaporean property developer, believes that regardless of its major industrial zones, Batam still boasts pristine seashores and a country charm.

Her firm, the KOP Group, is bankrolling the upmarket Montigo Resorts venture, which might assist reverse Batam's popularity as a shabby place the place Singaporeans established factories - and where some men keep Indonesian mistresses.

"I simply felt that it is a gem that has not been polished and that's not particularly reasonable because folks simply don't give it a chance," stated Ong, whose change of heart came when she went to view a vacant plot of land in 2008.

She made the decision instantly after viewing the property and the Montigo venture, which cost Sg$110 million ($88 million), will consist of 88 pool villas and 45 residences nestled on a hill with panoramic sea views. The advanced - which claims to be Batam's first 5-star resort.

Each Batam and Bintan are part of the Riau Archipelago, which has lengthy been overshadowed by Bali as a tourist destination.

"Batam's benefit is its proximity to Singapore, a tourism and aviation hub," stated Jonathan Galaviz, managing director of US-based analysis firm Galaviz and Company, which closely tracks Singapore's tourism industry.

With a population of just five to six million in comparison with Indonesia's 240 million and Malaysia's 28 million, Singapore's tourist arrivals boomed after it opened two casino resorts in 2010, constructing on its role as a gateway to the neighboring Southeast Asian region.

To know more about it, I wrote this article to introduce the place where I live on the island of Batam Riau Islands, Indonesia. I will not write about Batam city profile due to you can search by yourself on Google, so that will be written this time around Batam is my experience that certainly  different from the experience in my village.

Ok let started. So here are the interesting facts about Batam.

Singapore

As one of the province closest to the neighboring country, it is no wonder Singapore has a lot of influence on the lives of Batam. The distance is usually by a ferry only 45 minutes away plus 5 ferry terminal scattered everywhere so it is not surprising to most people in Batam is certainly ever go to Singapore. I was often so. Go in the morning lurking there into the night and just got home at the last ferry. So not need to pay rent a very expensive hotel there. Ticket prices range from about $ 42 USD. If there is a long public holiday, it can be ascertained Batam city will empty since the many return to their home town (most of citizen in Batam are nomads) or are foreigner such as Singapore, Malaysia etc...

Lifestyle

Lifestyle in Batam also widely affected by Singapore and Malaysia. In Batam TV channels without cable or parabolic antenna also been able to see Singapore and Malaysia TV channel! Because it is close to Singapore then on Batam almost all kinds of Singapore second hand good/junk can easily to get. Starting from HP, clothes, laptops, to boots and sandals. I have a friend who works in Singapore by collecting junk and reselling them in Batam.

So for the people of Batam with insufficient capital also can follow latest trend in Batam. Also because the distances are very close to Singapore can usually be found uncle/oppa (in Korean) from Singapore that lurking around at Nagoya Batam especially in the week end. Well I think the nightlife in Batam all of you already quite familiar. Usually some of these uncle illegally to have a wife in Batam so fitting his weekend to meet his wife and child in Batam although in his native country may only have labor job like cleaning service or taxi driver not a white collar worker. Surely the presence of uncle/oppa also helps increase income for the prostitutes / transvestites in Batam. Then usually also often found in local newspapers Singaporean’ uncle who died while being associated with prostitutes. So tragically...

Colloquial

Many Batam people who can master the average Chinese Mandarin well. Maybe because the TV channels are providing a full mandarin, the surrounding environment and work demands which are established by Singaporeans in Batam. In fact many private school, has taught Mandarin since elementary. Also of course the English language is very important in Batam.

Economy

When I was visiting Jakarta I once asked by my friend if in Batam use Singapore dollars huh? Hah interesting question. Of course not, but if you go to the boutique shopping at the mall and had no rupiah anymore, they still accept dollars. In fact, it was more profitable to use the dollar for clothes bag purse usually imported from Singapore. Therefore the money changer mushrooming in the city of Batam. Batam is also driven by the economies of many foreign corporations from many in Batam shipyard, Electronics, manufacturing etc... They say Batam are job paradise seekers because there are many companies that coupled with the adoption of the Batam Free Trade Zone.

Food

Well that is for food lovers definitely cannot wait. Batam's most famous culinary seafood. Here there are lots of tasty seafood restaurant from the fresh sea. For food with a local flavor is also there. Want to eat Batak; Padang; Chinese; Japanese; Sunda is all around considering your pocket is not empty. There are also many food vendors. Which I kind of regret is nasi Padang here is less chili kick! Quite different from the original Nasi Padang in Jakarta.

Walk

Many foreign tourists come to Batam for spa or massage. If they are keen on beach in Batam, they will stay at the resort. Resort in Batam quite a lot with various water games facilities. If regular local visitors are more inclined to shopping because here bag / branded clothes have many brands and quite cheap.

From Singapore Rolling Down to Batam Island

Motor scooters are in plague proportions, every taxi driver has one hand always pumping the horn, and roads that begin as autobahns all of the sudden flip into pot-holed tracks. Hey, Mates, I don't think you're in Singapore any more.

However you're solely 20km away, on Indonesia's Batam Island, and it's only taken you an hour journey to get right here on the Batamfast ferry from Singapore's Harbourfront.

Common ferries shuttle Singaporeans to Batam to purchase low-cost clothes and layer cake, and convey Indonesians to Singapore to buy cellphones that work. There are massive, excited, chattering crowds, competing with the Indonesian music blared out by the onboard TV within the nook of the ferry. The trip itself is an experience.

The city of Batam is the richest and quickest rising city in Indonesia. Manufacturing and engineering have drawn in firms from all over the world and the industry has drawn in people from throughout Indonesia.
Opposite the Central Ferry Terminal are the Hypermart and the Mega Mall. Amid the red soil of new building sites, new housing is being thrown up everywhere.

The coast of Batam, like that of its subsequent door neighbor Bintan, is dotted with resorts. Singaporeans flock to Batam for weekends of golf and women, we had been told. Rainforest is being sacrificed for golf courses and beaches privatized.

Tua Pek Kong Batam Twice Survives Raging Fire

Batam people are generally more familiar with Buddhist Vihara Budhi Bhakti as the Tua Pek Kong. One of the oldest monasteries in Batam, located in Windsor, District Lubukbaja.

The atmosphere of the past will be felt when we visited the Buddhist Vihara Budhi Bhakti. Buddha Vihara Budhi Bhakti is different from most of the monasteries. In this monastery there are three religions (Tri Dharma), namely Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism who perform religious rites in it. Although in the same temple, but worshiped different Gods.

The main building is a place of worship Taoists and Buddhists, where the altar there were Toa Pek Kong statue of the god, the god Kwan Kong, and god Lupan Sien Sen for Taoist religion. While there is a separate altar statue of god Sakyamuni worshiped by Buddhist. In a separate room there is also a statue of Kwan Im Goddess and Buddha Maitreya.

For adherents of Confucianism, where concentrated in a separate building that is located in a building that was once the entertainment stage. Historically, Buddhist Vihara Budhi Bhakti had moved in four different locations. Starting from simple Tua Pek Kong temple measuring 3 meters x 3 meters in rubber plantations, precisely in the foothills of the National Camp (now PT Mc Dermott) built by Li Lim in 1953 ago. The building was made of grass thatch-roofed wood.

Three years later (1955), Tua Pek Kong temple was burned simple. After that, there are 20 households in the village residents who were mutual aid to build the temple.

Over time, Batam continues to grow. Industry started to go. 1968, Tua Pek Kong temple was moved to Jodoh street. In a plot of land under rubber because of the location of the foothills of the National Camp will be built PT Ingram.

After that, the Tua Pek Kong temple was moved to the location Samyong Market (now Tanjungpantun Market) where that location is the center of Batam's shopping and residential communities.

In the new location, Tua Pek Kong temple occupies an area of 300 square meters. But still made of wood and tin roof. Consists of four main buildings, where the main prayer area of 4 x 5 meters, the two buildings that serve as a resting place, and the stage that serves as a place of entertainment stage if there is a big event these days.

Until sometime in the late 80s, came the great fire which destroyed all the buildings in a mate. However, strangely the only two places of worship which stood intact, that is Mosque and Tua Pek Kong temple that is still intact.

Several years later, Tua Pek Kong temple then moved to Windsor until now.

Establishment of Budhi Bhakti Buddhist monastery in Windsor cannot be separated from the contribution of foreign tourists who pray in this temple. From the beginning until now Budhi Bhakti Buddhist monastery in Windsor is never devoid of tourists visiting foreign countries, especially the tourists who want to pray at this temple.

After that, the Batam Buddha disciples hand in hand to build Budhi Bhakti Buddhist monastery to be like this now.

From time to time, Budhi Bhakti Buddhist monastery continues to grow. Places that are still used as a spacious garden occupied with statues of gods artistically constructed by several sponsors. Like the statue of Kwan Im Goddess, Kwan Kong, Buddha Sakyamuni, miniature Admiral Ceng Ho and his ship.
Many tourists are posing against the backdrop of the statues. Broad field, located in the middle of an area of 1.7 hectares land. Activities such as gymnastics Tai Chi and Shaolin Kung Fu training were held in this field.

The Rousing Fireworks.

Ahead of Chinese New Year, rushing at the Buddha Vihara Budhi Bhakti is more crowded than a typical day. Walls and fences painted like new. Not to forget the typical Chinese New Year decorations, the lanterns. Hundreds of small and large size lanterns hung either indoors or outdoors that is created with a rope and electrical cord.

Dozens of large incense colored dragon motif planted in front of the main building, the smoke that continues to soar nose ambushed upon entering the gates of the monastery which is also known as Tua Pek  Kong  Bio. Meanwhile, in the main building, light of the candle and the light of lanterns together so as to make the red bias effect. Moreover, objects that exist in the worship space were also dominant red. No wonder, if the monastery is the dominant color of red paint.

Seven days before Chinese New Year, when the moon has revealed it’s fully form, thousands of community Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism (Tri Dharma) that the average is Batam Chinese clan flocked to the temple to pray. Of children, teenagers, to older people, men and women. They rejoiced, prayed a prayer, prayer of hope and prayer of thanksgiving in the presence of the gods.

Fitted peak at midnight the parking area will be full of vehicles and the community will thronged Buddhist monastery for prayer purposes. The more nights, the more solid oratory and altars are also filled with fruit or pastries that come courtesy of the disciples.

Not only marked by devotion and prayer to the gods and the ancestors of course, the night also marked by festive fireworks. When the clock was nearly 24 pm, officials set off fireworks from the front door of the jumbo size of the main building. BANG... BANG...  explosion loud and the sound is also typical of the attention people are across the street in front of the monastery.

The sky, colorful, lots of people who capture the beautiful moments with a camera phone. Each pause the sound of fireworks to applause and cries of the compact.

The Barelang Islands are basically 6 islands connected by 6 bridges. Some of beaches there are secluded and off the beaten track offering the tourists to be away from the crowds and enjoy some privacy. Some of the beaches are Pantai Pasir Putih (White Sands Beach), Pantai Melayu (Melayu Beach) and Memory Hill Beach. Toilets and changing rooms are available at some of the beaches while other has shacks where you can grab a snack.

Down at the Barelang Islands, connected to Batam by a series of 6 bridges, there are many good beaches, as well as an old Vietnamese refugee camp, that was occupied for 20 years by Vietnamese boat people, and has now been restored as a tourist attraction. This is also a favorite route for cyclists.

Visit Old Camp Vietnam Village

This is the ultimate destination if you are interested in history tourism. This is the site of the refugee camp of the Vietnamese Boat People Village between 1976 and 1996. The most visited place here is the Quan and Tu Monastery which was built in 1984.

In the Afternoon

Visit Nongsa Point Marina Beach

It is the islands hottest tourist area. The seaside scenery surrounded by lush green forests takes you away from the pressures and hurdles of city life. You may discover the tradition via organized treks and bicycle rides in the area. To get the best out of this beach, the most effective time to visit would either later afternoon or within the evening. It's also one of the standard spots for snorkeling around the reefs.

At the Night

The nightlife is Batam is divided into the different areas of the region but mostly concentrated at Nagoya city area.

That is the most bustling area after hours stuffed with pubs and bars. The most recent and hottest place that is opened in the area is the Pacific Disco on the Pacific Hotel. It is constructed in the form of a ship and aptly nicknamed the 'Titanic'.

Along the streets and side roads are numerous pubs, with many side by side. Lucy's Oarhouse is a popular spot, which also serves meals & snack food. They have Batam's only GoGo bar, PP Banana which is upstairs and is open from 2pm on Fri / Sat / Sun only.

Across the road from Lucy's is Rio Rita. Stepping out from Lucy's and turning right you will discover many more bars. The first is the Jungle Bar which was one of Batam's earliest bars and still lives on today. Next is Classics and across from there is the Red Cock Inn which serves some very tasty Western and Asian dishes. Next door to Classics is the Ice Pub, also one of Batam's earlier pubs.

Travel to Batam: Dragon Fruit Plantation in Barelang Bridge and Seafood

When you arrived in Batam, Some tour guide told you to try a cake made of dragon fruit. Probably you will be wonder if the dragon fruit is the typical fruit in Batam?

When visiting the Barelang Bridge, you also can go to dragon fruit plantation there and you will know that the dragon fruit is the typical Batam’s Fruit.
The dragon fruit plantation normally located close to the beach. This is a perfect location to plant the dragon fruit because based on the growers the dragon fruit need medium that nutrient-rich, sandy, sunny place and not muddy (therefore the dragon fruit crops shouldn't be watered too often) to grow. There are two kinds of dragon fruit which is split according to its color, white and red( actually its purplish red).

It was nice to be in this plantation. The atmosphere isn't too crowded, the scenery is so stunning and crucial is you'll be able to enjoy the dragon fruit fresh from the plantation.

From the dragon fruit plantation, we can head to...seafood restaurant! It feels waste if we went to Batam but don't eat seafood.

In Barelang, there are many seafood restaurants that built above the sea. The restaurant was built using woods and drums as a baseline. In my opinion, this restaurant is very unique. Because it is built above the sea, when the ocean waves come, we can feel the restaurant moves. When the sea water gets high then the restaurant will go up. There are the houses of fishermen in beside this seafood restaurant.

In the center of the restaurant, there are many small pools like this that contain fish, shrimp, crabs and others, so you can choose directly the seafood that you want to eat.
