I believe i was in Batam

Last week i SMSed him and asked how about we spontaneously ride down to KL for the weekend. He was apprehensive as we had no accomodation booked and i retorted with "I thought you're the one who love going places unplanned!"

So he dampened my spontaneity but we still went to Golden Mile anyway. Reaching there, i became the one who was apprehensive because this was all so last minute, and i didn't want to "rush" to anywhere. But then he became enthusiastic and really wanted to go somewhere.

So upon the woman's recommendation, we took up the package for 2D1N Batam. We thought it was a really good deal. $95 each with a night's stay at a 4 star hotel, ferry return, land transfers, breakfast & dinner & a 90 MINUTE MASSAGE. The massage was really the deal breaker, we're both suckers for massages.

However, when it comes to making payment, we're already a little disgruntled because we had to pay an additional $20 per person for some tax. Although she stressed that tax doesn't go to her company but to the governement. But as the consumer, we only focused on it being $115 for the package!

When we asked her how much it was for a return ferry ticket on its own, she said it costs $45, so we thought ok, for an extra $50 we get massage, hotel & meals it's not a bad deal. We usually pay $50 for a one hour massage in Singapore anyway.

Guess what was the price of the ferry tickets when we reached Harbourfront on Sat morning? It was $34.

Upon arrival at Batam, we had to pay ANOTHER $7 per person for Batam's tax.By this time, we were really unhappy about all the "hidden" charges and felt we're "cheated" of the notion of a cheap weekend getaway. Although frankly we weren't reeeeeally cheated, its just all these frill costs that made the trip not THAT worthwhile anymore! Seeing that whatever we have to pay times two= quite a large sum to spend for one weekend. We could have just stayed in Singapore and saved the money.

But ok, enough griping. Once it's spent, it's spent. So ok, the hotel lobby was rather impressive.

and i thought i would have a posh place to stay in. I thought 4 stars is only 1 star away from 5 stars so it shouldn't be far off from the Intercontinental that i stayed in Bali right? It pales in comparision. The room was dingy, the carpet was stained, the lamp shades were yellow.

Buuuuuut..........its ok. I got over my disappointment rather quickly after entering. Afterall, it's not like i'm a princess who's used to living in posh hotels.

The nicest spot of the hotel, our free dinner atop a roof top. The hotel has free shuttle to Nongoya Hills, the largest shopping mall in Batam (to avoid disappointment, don't compare it with Singapore's malls) so we milled around the mall and walked the streets of Batam for some hours.

Then we took the scheduled shuttle back to the hotel and spent time in the gym and the professional table tennis player taught me some ping pong tricks. Me with my complete collection of watermelon pouches.

Holidays are always spent eating and sleeping. With nothing to do, we had our feed hourly. I was estatic to see the defunct A&W. Alas, they don't have the hotdogs (halal country). But they do have the curly fries (1SGD) and waffle with ice-cream (3SGD)!

The Ayam Penyet that we always have in Singapore costs $7 while here it costs (same brand, same outlet) $2. But before you go "cheap cheap" like a Singaporean, the serving size here is 3 times smaller. Measely tiny peice of chicken that you can barely call meat with no kangkong. But it's good for me! Like this i can stomach more variety and keep things bite sized. A man will get grumpy though..because he didn't eat enough. So we had to have Pizza Hut next (SGD 5 for 6 slices).

I try to stay away from fried food and soft drinks (unless on a holiday) but i just realised i have been taking way to much sugar (especially being an Office Lady, you eat alot of sweets and junk food at the desk). Although i am happy with my size and weight, my fat percentage is rather high. I wished they would go to my boobs but it doesn't seem to work that way.Sugar is the cause of cancer. Time to detox sugar.

Indonesia is full of slums. Sometimes i wonder how amazing life is. You may be born a Japanese, you may be born an American, you may be born a Chinese, what made you the way you are today? What gave you life? We are really fortunate to be born in Singapore, i am very blessed to be born with four limbs and in a happy family. Should you be born any less fortunate, do you give up on life or stay angry with the world? Do you take revenge by bombing locations that the rich hang out?

Maybe i can say it that way because i am not born any less fortunate. Maybe i will feel differently if i was. And so just because we are more fortunate, we should make a difference in the lives of those who have less means.

My best friend made some new friends while clubbing one night. He was then invited to hang out somemore after the clubs closed. They took him to their homes and he saw 5 people squeezing in a "house" with no walls. Their siblings slept on the wet cardboard floor. The homeless, young and old slept outside in the rain on the streets. He sat on the wet cardboard floor and hung out with them. I wish i had the privilege of having a personal account like he did.
We all need reminders to appreciate life more.

From the agent's recommendation, we were expecting a spa with candle light and romantic atmosphere. So we were disappointed yet again to enter a no-frills massage center (although its within the hotel). But the massage was SO GOOD, it didn't matter.

I gave the masseurs a 100,000 rupiah tip for giving us both such great massages. I admit i wasn't all that willing to because i kept thinking i have already paid for their service and i owe them no tip(besides, that's my 1 week's lunch). But i remembered how elated i was to receive tips when i waitressing (even though i wasn't that poor to need the tip that desperately). For all i know, maybe their families are living in povety.

It's a blessing to be able to give.

What you can do in Batam: ATV bike ride, cable skiing, massage, food and SHOPPING (alot of fake goods if that's what you're into. Bags cost around $45 (after bargaining), pouches and key chains costs around $10, wallets costs around $20. I didn't buy any, no design appealed.)
Food is relatively cheap, although i can't quite figure out how i spent $100 in the 2 days after paying upfront for hotel & ferry etc AND having bought NOTHING material.

Sun, Beach and Fun in Batam

This time, it was Batam. Located about 20 km south of Singapore, Batam island is very much similar to Bintan which we had visited last year. Lush greenery, plenty of 'sea' to 'see', sun, beaches and sand. Nothing less to expect from this truly beautiful island in Indonesia.

Our population doubled this time - we were a group of (lucky?) 13 restless souls, just waiting to get our asses out of our labs and a few hundred kms away from research. And get off we did, in style :). Merry-ly taking the ferry ride from Tanjong Pagar, we made for Batam on Feb the 15th, the start of Chinese New year hols. The ferry ride is a most enjoyable experience - apart from being hot due to the sun, the ride is actually pretty Cool :). Watching the busy Singapore skyline (and along with it, all memories of research fading into the distance.. seriously, no feeling could be better !

KTM resorts - thats where we stayed. Beautiful place. No testimonial would be enough to do justice to the five-star royal treatment we got there. Just - dont try to expand the name K-T-M :). Since the exchange rate was pretty high, we were millionaires by the time we reached, and immediately set about blasting off every inch of currency that we had stored up.

Water sports are one of the major attractions in Batam. Para-sailing, Jet-skiiing, Banana-boating and Kayaking - these were the items on the menu. Needless to say, we ordered all :). The para-sailing was a first for me- being slightly afraid of heights, I never thought I'd pull(rather, fly) it off, but it turned out to be an awesome experience with a sufficient amount of 'high' to it ! :). After sufficiently wetting ourselves (no pun intended ;) ) on all the rides, we decided to call it a day (er.. at 4 pm in the evening) and go around city-seeing a bit. The Barelang bridge was 'bery bery laang', and actually a let-down.. there was nothing to do there except to.. er.. watch it :). Tired of letdowns, we retired to our beautiful villas.

Needless to say, the high-night was one of the high-lights of the trip. Dumb-C was called for. Despite being 'dumb', we were pretty noisy out there, mind you :). 3 hours and a few kilos of junk food later, we made for the beach, and wasted away sometime until we decided to call it a.. thats right.. night. Next day, after refilling ourselves with enough food for a few days, we set out to Nongsa beach.

Nongsa is one of those paradises on earth called a beautiful beach. Thirteen hot people out there (yea yea, hot cos of the sun ;) ) - we 1st cooled ourselves in the inviting blue waters. Few hundred pics and some desperate attempts at swimming and stunt-making. A pitiable round of volley-ball was followed by a coconut break, and even more pitiable gaming :). Truly, I have never had enough of sea, sand and sun in my life. Finally when we'd all turned different bright shades of crimson, we decided to call it quits and return to the city. BCS mall was our final stand - our shopping consisted of an incredible mixture of tatooing, food, and sun-glasses ! Loads of them ! Finally we made a desperate rush for the resort and then the ferry terminal.

The night trip back on the ferry is a beautiful experience too. An hour or so later, we were thirteen tired but satisfied souls, cribbing about what lay ahead for us in our boring labs the next day.

My Short Trip to Batam

It takes about 45 minutes ferry ride from the Harbour Front ferry terminal to go to Harbour Bay ferry terminal in Batam. There are some ferry operators with some different destination port from Singapore to Batam.

My husband and I took ‘Wavemaster’ ferry to Harbour Bay ferry terminal, a return ticket of $48.00 per person is cheaper than one way ticket which cost more than half of price. Waiting bay is clean, nice and not packed with people perhaps it was on Tuesday morning.

I enjoyed the sea breeze and the smell of the ocean until I realized that the ferry had arrived at Harbour Bay. First destination was Nagoya Hill, a new and big shopping mall surrounded by small shop houses with many variety of business. I like this kind of shopping malls where there are many unique shops selling different kind of stuffs. Bargaining is important to get good and cheap stuffs such as cloths, shoes and other things, of course it’s not easy to bargain if you do not have roughly idea on the price.

After strolling around almost one hour in the mall, we moved to the food gallery to find something to eat, so many small restaurants and food stalls offer delicious foods and refreshing drinks. Finally we decided to have our lunch at a Sundanese restaurant, it was good, yummy and cheap too, It costs around $10 for 2 people including fresh fruit juices.

From Nagoya Hill we took taxi heading to Batam Centre, actually this is another ferry terminal in central area but our ticket was return ticket for Harbour Bay which meant we had to take our return trip also from there. Taxi cost around $6 -$7 depends on the car condition and taxi operator and the price was not fix too. It’s about 20 minutes driving to get to Batam Centre, The mall is smaller than Nagoya Hill but nice place to shop, eat and relax too.

We spent our time having light meal i.e. empek-empek and es campur while resting our foot and enjoying the harbour view from the restaurant’s window. There are a movie theater and some Spas in this shopping mall which most visited by Singaporeans.

At dusk, we went back to the Harbour Bay, walking and exploring the new shopping mall which is adjacent to the Harbour Bay ferry terminal and Windsor seafood centre along the seaside. The mall just opened around February 2010, some shops had not opened for business yet, we went to Carefour to grab some avocados and other stuffs in our shopping list.

After finish shopping, we rushed to the seaside food centre, they open their business in the evening till early morning. Having an al-fresco diner under the clear sky was fantastic and memorable. The eating place was simple and clean, we could choose the fresh fish, prawn and crabs ourselves. We started to check out the menu, there were no price listed even the waitress had no idea at all how much was the food cost but politely offered to check with the cashier for the price. Anyway, we didn’t want to wait any longer as our stomach growled, we ordered some seafood meals and they served the food about 20 minutes later, their prawn and fish were really fresh and tasty, we enjoyed the meal and the ambience, after we got the bill we found their price was reasonable, it’s around 40% of the price for the same food in Singapore.

Full stomach and tired, we walked down to the ferry terminal and caught the last ferry for that day to return to Singapore.
